Music is many different things for many different people-- it is an educational subject, it is a universal point of communication, it is a part of every culture, it allows for expression through creativity in a way words nor numbers can express, and it provides an opportunity to create a community filled with support and a place for everyone to belong. Through music everyone is given a unique ability to learn more about others and about themselves. Music provides many connections and everyone deserves to discover and learn how to use those connections for themselves.
From the many points listed above, I will draw my philosophy based upon three key words and how they will be incorporated in my music classroom: creativity, expression, and community.
The rehearsal process should involve all students in creating the music. This includes learning how and why the composer chose these notes or those dynamics and creating our own interpretations of the pieces being performed. This creative process provides the students an opportunity to think outside of the box and to both see and hear how important their contributions are to the entire ensemble.
Through the experience of music, students can benefit both individually and as a whole. As an individual, each student will be able to discover the art of expression. Music is about much more than simply playing the correct notes and markings on the page. It stems from the creative process of learning the techniques and why these techniques are applied. It then leads to each student uncovering the wealth of potential they hold, as well as how they can use these discoveries to express themselves.
Lastly, but certainly not least, I will encourage each of my classes to not only be a group of individuals, but an entire community. It is entirely possible to have a good ensemble comprised of excellent musicians, but it is only with the respect and appreciation for everyone's role that a great ensemble will emerge. An ensemble is a team, with each part its own gear in the finished product. I will lead this environment of respect by setting the example myself and providing ample opportunities for my students to create relationships among themselves. I will lead all students to the knowledge that each part is equally important and it is the work we do together that makes the strongest ensemble. It is my ultimate goal to make all students who walk into my classroom feel that they are important and that they are a part of something equally important.
